PayAdvisors vs a PEO: Co-Employment or Your Own Payroll Team
A PEO (professional employer organization) becomes a co-employer of your staff. It pays your people and usually reports payroll taxes under its own EIN, and it often bundles health benefits and workers' comp. PayAdvisors does not co-employ anyone. Our payroll team runs your payroll under your own EIN, you stay the only employer, and you approve every run.

In short
Which one fits you?
Choose a PEO if your main goal is access to a pooled health plan or workers' comp through a larger group, you have no HR person, and you are comfortable sharing the employer role and moving your people onto the PEO's payroll and plans.
Choose PayAdvisors if you want to stay the employer of record, keep your own EIN, benefits broker and plans, and you mainly need the payroll work done right every pay period, by a team, without hiring a payroll person.

PayAdvisors vs PEO questions
What is the difference between a PEO and a payroll service?
A PEO becomes a co-employer of your staff and usually reports payroll taxes under its own EIN, often with its own benefit plans and workers' comp. A payroll service like PayAdvisors runs your payroll under your EIN, and you stay the only employer.
Is PayAdvisors a PEO?
No. We do not co-employ anyone. Our payroll team runs your payroll, files your payroll taxes and handles agency notices, and you approve every run.
Can I keep my own health plan and broker with PayAdvisors?
Yes. You keep your plans and your broker. We handle the payroll deductions and coordinate with your broker so plan changes do not break payday.
Who is liable for payroll taxes with a PEO?
It depends on the arrangement. The IRS says a certified PEO is generally solely liable for employment taxes on wages it pays to worksite employees. With a payroll service provider, the employer remains liable for timely filings and deposits, which is why we build buffer time in before every deadline.
What happens to our state tax accounts if we leave a PEO?
If the PEO reported under its own accounts, you usually need your own state withholding and unemployment accounts before your first payroll on your own. We register them and track each one until it is issued. See PEO exit payroll.
Is there a minimum commitment with PayAdvisors?
No. Service is month to month, with no minimum term.
