Quick answer

Nevada payroll tax registration at a glance

Nevada has no state income tax on individuals' wages, so there is no state withholding account to open. The payroll registration is with the Employment Security Division (ESD) of the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR), for unemployment insurance (UI).

Registering with ESD automatically registers you with the Department of Taxation for the Modified Business Tax (MBT), a quarterly tax on wages. New employers pay a 2.95% UI rate plus a 0.05% Career Enhancement Program (CEP) tax on the first $43,700 of each employee's 2026 wages.

Registration steps

How to register in Nevada

One registration, then two portals.

  1. Register with the Employment Security Division for unemployment insurance once you meet the $225 test.
  2. Create your Employer Self Service (ESS) logon as a newly registered employer, to file reports and manage the account online.
  3. Watch for your Modified Business Tax account. You are registered automatically, and your MBT account number arrives in your "New Nevada Employer Welcome Package."
  4. Set up My Nevada Tax with the Department of Taxation, where MBT returns are filed online.
  5. Report new hires to ESD within 20 days of each hire.

One form, two agencies

Nevada's short list still has quarterly traps

One registration, but two quarterly returns to two agencies, due even when nothing is owed.

On your own

  • Registering with ESD and finding your MBT number
  • Two quarterly returns in two portals
  • Knowing which health benefits reduce MBT wages

With your PayAdvisors tax manager

  • Your tax manager handles both with you
  • We keep both on one calendar
  • We review your deductions with you

Prepare

What to collect first

Nevada's reports need employee-level detail.

  • Your federal EIN, which is different from your Nevada account numbers
  • The date your Nevada wages reached $225 in a quarter
  • For each employee: Social Security number, first and last name, reported tips and total gross wages
  • Employer-paid health insurance or health benefit plan costs, which reduce MBT wages
  • Details of any Nevada business you are buying, if you want its experience record transferred

Accounts

What you end up with

Two account numbers from one registration.

  • A Nevada UI employer account with ESD, managed in Employer Self Service.
  • A Modified Business Tax account number from the Department of Taxation. It is not your federal EIN.
  • The 2.95% new employer rate for 14 to 17 calendar quarters, then an experience rate.

Pitfalls

Nevada mistakes to avoid

Most problems come from returns nobody thought were due.

  • Skipping a no-wage quarter. Every registered employer files the ESD report each quarter, even with no wages.
  • Skipping MBT because no tax is due. All employers file an MBT return each quarter, even under $50,000 in wages.
  • Deducting HSA contributions from MBT wages. Employer HSA contributions are not a deductible health benefit for MBT.
  • Leaving a closed business open. Tell ESD when you stop having employees, or the account stays active and can be assessed for unfiled reports.
  • Counting CEP on Form 940. CEP is a separate state tax and is not credited against federal unemployment tax.

Related duties

Other Nevada employer obligations

These run alongside the tax accounts.

  • New hire reporting. Report to the ESD New Hire Unit within 20 days of hire, or of a rehire after at least 60 days apart. Secure FTP is preferred; copies of W-4s by mail or fax also work.
  • Electronic filing and payment. ESD reports must be filed online unless you get a waiver, and payments of $10,000 or more must be electronic.
  • Four "no payroll" quarters in a row lead ESD to suspend the account automatically.
  • Buying a business. Notify ESD within 90 days if you want the seller's experience record.

Filing calendar

Nevada deadlines after registration

Both quarterly returns share the same due dates.

  • ESD Contribution and Wage Report: April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31, moved to the next business day for a weekend or holiday.
  • Modified Business Tax return: by the last day of the month after each quarter.
  • Late ESD report: $5, plus 0.1% of taxable wages for each month or part of a month after 10 days.
  • Late ESD payment: interest of 1% of the contributions due for each month or part of a month.

Nevada registration questions

Does Nevada have state payroll income tax withholding?

No. Nevada does not impose a state income tax on individuals, so there is no state withholding account.

How do I register for Nevada payroll taxes?

Register with the Employment Security Division for unemployment insurance once you pay $225 in wages in a calendar quarter. That registration also signs you up for the Modified Business Tax.

What is the 2026 Nevada new employer rate?

2.95% on the first $43,700 of each employee's wages, plus the 0.05% Career Enhancement Program tax.

What is the Modified Business Tax?

A quarterly tax on gross wages, less employer-paid health benefits. For most businesses it is 1.17% of wages above the first $50,000 in the quarter, and a return is due even when no tax is owed.

When are Nevada quarterly reports due?

April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31 for ESD, and the last day of the month after the quarter for MBT.

I am the only employee of my S corporation. What do I need in Nevada?

If you pay yourself wages and reach $225 in a quarter, you register with ESD, which also opens your MBT account. A dedicated tax manager can complete the registration with you as part of our S corp payroll package.

When are new hires due?

Within 20 days of hire.

How is registration priced?

In Nevada you usually get one ID, your Employment Security Division unemployment account, because Nevada has no state income tax. Registering with ESD also enrolls you for the Modified Business Tax. Pricing depends on the states and accounts involved. We'll quote it on a quick consultation.

Is this tax advice?

No. It summarizes official guidance from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation and the Nevada Department of Taxation. Ask your CPA or tax advisor about your own facts.
