Every state and Washington, DC charges employers state unemployment insurance (UI) tax on wages up to a yearly cap, the taxable wage base. In 2026 that cap runs from $7,000 (Arkansas, California, Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee) to $78,200 (Washington). 9 states have no state income tax withholding: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. New employer UI rates are set by each state, and some states assign them by industry.
The table lists the agencies you register with and the two numbers employers ask about first. These are published state figures, not tax advice. Your own rate arrives on your state rate notice, so confirm it with the state agency or your CPA.
