Quick answer

New Hampshire payroll tax registration at a glance

New Hampshire employers usually open one state payroll account. New Hampshire has no income tax on W-2 wages, so there is no state withholding account to open. New Hampshire Employment Security (NHES) handles unemployment insurance, and you apply online for an employer account number.

New employers start at 2.7% on the first $14,000 of each employee's wages, less any Fund Balance Reduction for the quarter; NHES lists a 1.0% reduction for each quarter of 2026. New hires go to NHES within 20 days.

Registration steps

How to register in New Hampshire

One registration, then new hire reporting.

  1. Confirm there is no withholding account to open. New Hampshire does not tax W-2 wages.
  2. Register with NHES online within 30 days before your first date of employment. You get a confirmation number and later an employer account number.
  3. Don't wait on a backlog. NHES says applications are backlogged; if you owe a quarterly report before your number arrives, file it with "Applied For" in the account number field and use the new employer rate.
  4. Report each new hire to NHES within 20 days, online through the NHES Web Tax & New Hire Reporting System.
  5. File a tax and wage report every quarter while you have employment.

Pitfalls

New Hampshire mistakes to avoid

Most problems come from waiting.

  • Registering too early. NHES won't accept a registration more than 30 days before your first date of employment.
  • Waiting for the account number. A quarterly report is still due on time; file with "Applied For" if you don't have a number yet.
  • Skipping workers' comp for family or part-time staff. Coverage applies to every employee, related or not.

Related duties

Other New Hampshire employer obligations

These run alongside the NHES account.

  • New hire reporting. Report all new hires to NHES within 20 days; NHES also runs a separate program for independent contractors.
  • Workers' compensation. Every employer with full or part-time employees must carry coverage from a carrier. Corporations and LLCs with three or fewer officers or members and no other employees aren't required to.
